Welcome to Whale Shark Mexico
Whale Shark Mexico (WSM) is part of the non-profit organization Conexiones Terramar A.C. Our mission is to research, preserve, and promote the sustainable management of whale sharks in the Gulf of California, especially around southern Baja California.
Joining our internship means becoming part of this mission while gaining hands-on experience in marine conservation.
What you’ll do
As an intern, you will contribute directly to our research and conservation goals. Activities include:
- Collecting whale shark identification photographs (Photo-ID).
- Recording size, sex, and injuries of individuals.
- Monitoring environmental conditions.
- Using drones for behavioral studies.
- Assisting with plankton sampling, microplastic analysis, and genetic studies.
- Supporting outreach activities such as school talks or beach clean-ups.
What You’ll Learn
During your internship you will gain skills in:

- Data management: Building a photo-ID catalog, using databases, and contributing to a global whale shark network.
- Conservation in action: Understanding how science informs management plans for endangered species.
- Community engagement: Environmental education and outreach in La Paz.
Daily Life
- Day 1: Arrival in La Paz. We’ll pick you up at the airport and welcome you to the intern house.
